President Barack Obama's approval rating is at its all-time high since his 2013 inauguration, reaching 54 percent after the Democratic National Convention, according to a new CNN/ORC Poll.

Clinton's numbers are up mostly among younger Americans:

  • Under 45: Up 9 points;
  • Over 45: Down one point;
  • Political independents and moderates: Up 9 points each.

Obama's approval in his second term is about the same as late President Ronald Reagan's in 1988, and near resident Bill Clinton's 57 percent approval rating at about this point of his second term in 2000.

With Obama backing Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and strongly opposing Donald Trump, his high approval numbers could work to Clinton's benefit, reports CNN, as those who approve of Obama also strongly back Clinton:

  • 94 percent of people approving of Obama back Clinton;
  • 85 percent of Obama's opponents back Trump.

However, CNN points out that the numbers don't always translate. In 2000, Al Gore lost his election, even with Bill Clinton's high marks.

Most voters also think Clinton will continue Obama's policies, with Obama opponents most likely to say she'll follow his plans:

  • 64 percent, yes;
  • 33 percent, no;
  • Opponents: 74 percent yes;
  • People approving: 57 percent, no.
  • Clinton supporters: 53 percent, yes, 44 percent, no.
  • Trump supporters: 82 percent yes.

However, the numbers of people who agree with Trump that things are going badly has dropped:

  • Going badly: 54 percent;
  • Very badly: 26 percent;
  • Among Trump supporters, 86 percent say things are going badly.

The poll was conducted July 29-31 by phone with 1,003 adults, including 894 registered voters and carried a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
