President Barack Obama's approval ratings are sliding – pushed into negative territory by Americans' pessimism about his handling of terrorism, a new poll shows.

According to the Washington Post-ABC News survey, 46 percent of respondents approve of the president while 50 percent disapprove.

The slide reverses a 51-45 positive margin in October – his best score in more than two years – and was fueled by a whopping 40 percent of Americans who "strongly disapprove," the highest that measure has been since last December, according to the Post.

The hit on the president's approval doesn't appear to be caused by the job he's doing with the economy; 48 percent approve and 48 percent disapprove, the survey shows.

But Obama's handling of terrorism has shifted since before the Paris attacks, falling to a new low of 40 percent, down seven points from January, the Post reports.

Those who "strongly disapprove" of Obama on terrorism jumped from 31 percent to 43 percent, surpassing the previous record high of strong disapproval of 35 percent, the Post reported.

His handling of the Islamic State (ISIS) is even worse, the poll shows: 57 percent disapprove – with 46 percent strongly disapproving.

The survey's margin of error is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
