Sixty-four percent of Americans say racism remains a major problem in society and politics, according to a new NBC news/Survey Monkey poll.
Another 30 percent say racism exists today, but it is not a major problem. Three percent believe it once existed, but no longer does and one percent say it never has been a major problem.
Here is how the poll breaks down:
- 40 percent of African-Americans say they have been treated unfairly in a store or restaurant because of their race in the last month; 57 percent say they have not been treat unfairly.
- 26 percent of Hispanics say they have been treated unfairly in a store or restaurant based on their race; 70 percent say they have not been treated unfairly.
- 15 percent of whites say they have been treated unfairly in a store of restaurant because of their race, while 82 percent say they were not treated unfairly in that time frame.
- 48 percent of African-Americans say they've experienced workplace discrimination based on their race, while 43 percent say they have not.
- 36 percent of Hispanics say they have experienced discrimination in the workplace, while 52 percent say they have not.
- 14 percent of whites say they have experienced workplace discrimination, while 73 percent say they have not.
The survey, which polled 6,518 adults, was conducted May 14-21. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 1.5 percentage points.
The results come as Starbucks will close more than 8,000 stores nationwide on Tuesday to conduct anti-bias training.
This follows the arrests of two black men in Philadelphia last month at one of its stores. The coffee chain apologized to the two men and ordered the training for its 175,000 workers.
