President Donald Trump’s approval rating has slipped below 50 percent in 10 congressional districts that he won in 2016, and are now represented by Democrats in the House, according to a new poll from the Republican National Committee.

Trump’s campaign manager Brad Parscale shared the results of the survey, conducted by Public Opinion Strategies, with Politico on Monday.

The pollsters asked several hundred people in 10 districts that Trump won in 2016, often by double-digit margins, but are now represented by a Democrat, including MN-7, NY-2, SC-1, NY-11, OK-5, PA-8, ME-2, VA-7, NJ-3 and NY-19.

  • Trump’s approval rating is between 48 and 49 percent.
  • Support for Trump’s policies is 43 to 54 percent.
  • The average approval rating for Democrats in Congress in those districts is 20 percent to 30 percent.

Vox notes that Trump’s staff told Politico that “voters believe the current situation at the border represents a national security threat and a majority support building a wall or barrier,” however, when presented with messages touting a border wall, voters in these districts preferred a compromise between Trump and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., rather than taking Trump’s side and supporting a wall.

  • 33 percent said they support a border barrier.
  • 24 percent said they back Pelosi in opposing the wall.
  • 41 percent said they would like Trump and Pelosi to compromise.

Public Opinion Strategies, on behalf of the RNC, polled 800 people in 10 districts from Jan. 24 to 26, 2019, and has a margin of error of +/- 3.46 percentage points.
