Priebus to Williams: Scandal Could Go to Highest Levels

By    |   Tuesday, 21 May 2013 05:07 PM EDT

Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus says the scandals surrounding the administration and the federal government could possibly reach "to the highest levels in the White House."

During an interview on "The Armstrong Williams Show" on Sirius satellite radio, Williams cited the Benghazi affair, the IRS targeting of conservative groups, and the Justice Department's seizure of Associated Press phone records, and asked what level in Washington any of these issues might rise to.

"I'm not sure how high this is going to go but it's possible it reaches the highest levels in the White House," Priebus responded.

"I think we've got a few chapters to go before we get to the last chapter, and that's the job of the House and Senate, to investigate what happened, to connect the dots and see where the evidence leads.

"I think it's really important that we handle this intelligently and reasonably."

Referring to the IRS scandal, Priebus said "we have mixed stories as far as when the president knew. Obviously a lot of people around the president knew before the [Inspector General] report, contrary to what this folks have said in the beginning."

He added: "Benghazi continues to fester and there are a lot of unanswered questions as they relate to the president."

Asked by Williams why Benghazi "won't go away," Priebus said: "It won't go away because the administration hasn't been clean on how they've approached the questions they've received. The answers that were given both by the administration and by the Department of State weren't straight to the truth of what actually occurred, so you started out with misinformation, and then on top of it you had your assistant secretary of state out there perpetrating something that wasn't true."
