Democratic Party chairman Tom Perez is urging states that have not yet held primaries to vote by mail and expand early voting to keep the primary process going.
The call to mail ballots to all registered voters was included with a recommendation for "no-excuse absentee voting," which allows early voting. Also, per The Hill, Perez said polling places should expand their hours and days of service to reduce crowds and lines.
After all, putting off the vote might merely extend it to an even more dangerous time to hit the polling stations.
"States that have not yet held primary elections should focus on implementing the aforementioned measures to make it easier and safer for voters to exercise their constitutional right to vote, instead of moving primaries to later in the cycle when timing around the virus remains unpredictable," Perez said, per The Hill.
"The right to vote is the foundation of our democracy, and we must do everything we can to protect and expand that right instead of bringing our democratic process to a halt."
Perez tweeted:
"This crisis is a stark reminder of the need to expand early voting, vote by mail, and no-excuse absentee voting. We ought to be making it easier for folks to vote — especially in situations like this — not harder."
