Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao on Tuesday heatedly defended her husband, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., who was confronted by protesters at Georgetown University haggling him about President Donald Trump's policy at the U.S.-Mexico border, The Washington Post reports.
"Why don't you leave my husband alone?" Chao said after one young man repeatedly asked, "Why are you separating families?"
Another protestor was playing audio allegedly taken in a border detention facility of migrant children crying who had just been separated from their parents during the incident.
"I'm not trying to disrespect you, but why is he separating families?" the same young man said. "I'm not trying to disrespect you. He's separating families."
"No, he's not," she said. "You leave my husband alone," she added, pointing at the group while walking to her black SUV with the help of security guards.
"How does he sleep at night? How does he sleep at night?" the same protester yelled as she walks away.
Chao and McConnell, the Senate Majority Leader, were leaving an event at Georgetown when they were confronted.
