Pelosi Extends Proxy Voting Until Nov. 10

By    |   Friday, 23 September 2022 07:56 PM EDT

House members will be allowed to vote remotely until after the midterm elections due to the ongoing "public health emergency," reports The Hill.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., on Friday extended proxy voting until Nov. 10, citing the coronavirus pandemic.

Her announcement came less than a week after President Joe Biden during an interview on CBS' "60 Minutes" said the pandemic was "over."

"We still have a problem with COVID. We're still doing a lot of work on it," Biden said.

Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy later clarified Biden's comments, saying the president was reflecting the fact that "we have made tremendous progress against COVID-19."

He told MSNBC, "We're in a very different place now than we were at the beginning of this pandemic, with significantly lower death rates. We have all of our children back in school, people able to go back to work, families and friends able to see each other."

Republicans slammed the move by Pelosi.

"The big guy said 'C'mon man, pandemic is over,'" Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., wrote on Twitter. "Nevertheless, Pelosi extends proxy voting due to 'novel coronavirus' until the week of the election."

"Earlier this week, President Biden claimed that the pandemic was over. It seems everyone but Speaker Pelosi agrees," added Rep. Mike Gallagher, R-Wis. "By extending proxy voting, Speaker Pelosi continues to allow members to forgo the most important component of their job — voting — and lie to their constituents in the process. The day when Republicans take back the House and eliminate this unconstitutional and unethical practice can't come soon enough."
