Just 54 percent of American adults know that Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens, according to a Morning Consult poll published in The New York Times.

Given the utter destruction the island suffered in the path of Hurricane Maria, that knowledge affects public perception about aid that the commonwealth of the U.S. is entitled to, the Times reported.

Of Americans who know that Puerto Ricans are citizens, 81 percent support aid for the island compared to 44 percent of those who don't know, the Times reported.

Other results from the survey, according to The Upshot:

  • Just 37 percent of adults ages 18-29 know Puerto Ricans are citizens.
  • 64 percent ages 65+ know they are citizens.
  • 72 percent with a college education know they are citizens.
  • Just 47 percent without a college education know.

Again, when it comes to aid:

  • 64 percent overall said Puerto Rico should get aid to rebuild.
  • 14 percent overall said no.
  • 20 percent did not know or had no opinion.

Further, 68 percent overall said Puerto Rico should get aid when informed they are citizens, with that spike a large one for voters of President Donald Trump (+10) and Republicans (+12).

Morning Consult data was collected Sept. 22-24 among a national sample of 2,200 adults.
