Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam came close to resigning last weekend before changing his mind, ABC News is reporting.
The Democrat is under fire for a photo on his medical school yearbook page. The photo shows one man in a Ku Klux Klan robe and another in blackface. Northam apologized for the photo, but denied he was in it.
ABC News noted he has not been seen since Saturday when he made it clear he was not going to resign.
Northam had said on Saturday "as long as I feel that I can lead, I will continue to do that. If I reach a point where I am not comfortable with that, then obviously we will sit down and have that discussion."
But sources told the network news that he had come close to announcing his resignation before he reconsidered.
ABC News reported that a number of state lawmakers say they do not expect him to step down.
"I don't think anyone's resigning," said Republican Delegate Terry Kilgore.
Meanwhile, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. has called on Northam to quit.
