Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul was assaulted in his home Friday — and a Bowling Green man was arrested and charged with fourth-degree assault in the incident, the senator's office said Saturday.
"Senator Paul was blindsided and the victim of an assault," Kelsey Cooper, a spokeswoman for the second-term Republican, said in a statement. "The assailant was arrested and it is now a matter for the police.
"Senator Paul is fine," she said.
Kentucky State Police said that Paul suffered minor injuries, providing no further information, The Bowling Green Daily News reports.
Police identified the suspect as Rene Boucher, 59, of Bowling Green, who has been charged with fourth-degree assault, causing a minor injury.
Boucher, who faces a maximum penalty of 12 months in jail on the misdemeanor charge, was being held Saturday in the Warren County Regional Jail in lieu of a $5,000 bond, the Daily News reports.
According to State Police, troopers were called to Paul's home at 3:21 p.m. Friday.
Boucher was arrested after the Warren County Attorney's Office issued a warrant shortly after the assault, according to the Daily News.
