Priebus: GOP Must Win Senate – But He's Not Worried It Won't

By    |   Sunday, 05 October 2014 12:00 PM EDT

Republicans have to take control of the Senate in the November 4 midterm elections or they will have failed in their mission, says Reince Priebus, chairman of Republican National Committee.

But, he told "Meet the Press" host Chuck Todd on Sunday, he isn't concerned.

"The question for us is, are we going to win with six, seven or eight seats?" Priebus said.

Democrats currently control the Senate 55-45, so Republicans need to win at least six seats to swing the balance of power. That's important since they would then control both houses of Congress and would be more able to fight President Barack Obama's political agenda.

Controlling the Senate also would give them more say over presidential appointments.

Obama on Thursday "said that his policies are on the ballot," Priebus said. "Well, if Barack Obama is on the ballot and his policies are on the ballot, it's going to be a pretty bad year for Democrats."

He pointed to races in Arkansas, Alaska, South Dakota, West Virginia, Louisiana and Colorado.

"You're seeing Republicans in the lead," he said. "With a month out, I'd much rather be where we're at than where the Democrats are at."
