Rep. Pete King: Situation at Nation's Border a 'Nightmare'

By    |   Tuesday, 19 March 2019 01:39 PM EDT

There is a "nightmare" at the nation's border, and President Donald Trump has the right to handle it as an emergency and reallocate funding for a border wall, Rep. Pete King said Tuesday.

"The president, as commander-in-chief, the chief executive, has decided that this is a crisis, that it does warrant the description of all laws in certain locations," said the New York Republican on Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "The president has the right."

The border situation is a crisis, King added, and Trump "in his best judgment believes its an emergency."

He also said he disagrees with Sen. Jack Reed, D-R.I., who has said that Trump's diverting defense money to the border wall is "a slap in the face" for the military.

"I have a lot of respect for Jack Reed and served with him when he was in the House but he is not the president, is not the commander in chief," said King. "The president as commander in chief has to decide how to best allocate military funding and the president believes this is a national security threat. So, therefore, the money that is being used for defense he believes is very logical."

King also commented about the growing threat of cyber warfare, noting that the United States is doing the best it can, but more improvements are needed to stay ahead of enemies as well as it can.

"You look at banks, financial institutions and governors that the Pentagon and State Department and Congress, companies all over the world and those trying to hack in so no, this is a real threat," said King.
