A writer claims the Republican-controlled Congress might not be as willing to take on President Barack Obama's executive actions as it claimed it would be leading up to the midterm elections.
Genevieve Wood writes in
The Daily Signal that there might be cracks appearing in GOP leaders' promises to shoot down funding for some of
Obama's hotly contested maneuvers, particularly the one that granted amnesty for millions of people illegally living in the United States.
"But now there are growing concerns that Republicans in the Senate, despite being in the majority, aren't up for the battle," Wood writes.
Republicans have controlled the House under Speaker John Boehner since 2011. The Senate fell into the GOP's hands after last fall's midterm elections and is headed by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Wood mentions the House recently passed legislation that would hold back funding to the Department of Homeland Security, funding that would be for Obama's immigration plans. The legislation is now in the Senate, where it will be debated this month.
But Senate Democrats have threatened to filibuster to keep the debate off the floor, and Obama said he would use his veto powers if necessary.
"But none of this should be surprising," Wood writes. "Democrats are simply preparing to use whatever tactics and measures they have in their arsenal to keep Obama's power grab intact. The question is whether Republicans are willing to do the same to stop him."
Republicans, writes Wood, made their case to the American pubic about stopping Obama's amnesty plan — and they were successful, as
several polls show Americans are against it. Now they have to follow through with their plan to derail Obama's directive.
"Bottom line: the GOP had no trouble taking their case to the American public about the need to stop Obama's executive overreach on immigration, and their commitment to stopping it, when it came to using that argument to win votes," Wood writes. "Now that they control Congress, we'll see just how serious their promises were."
Last week, Boehner told
"Special Report" host Bret Baier he would not back down from fighting what he calls Obama's "violating the Constitution."
"I said in December we were going to do everything to try to stop him," Boehner said.
"That is why when we passed the [Homeland Security] appropriation bill a couple of weeks ago we took the president's ability to do what he did away from him. That bill is awaiting action over in the United States Senate.
"This is the president violating the Constitution, violating his oath of office and, frankly, not upholding the rule of law."
