The Rev. Franklin Graham has hailed Monday’s ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court in favor of a Christian baker who refused to make a wedding cake for a gay couple because of his religious beliefs.
"We thank God for answered prayer!" Graham, president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, said in a tweet.
"Today the Supreme Court has ruled in favor of Jack Phillips, the Colorado baker who refused to create a wedding cake for a same-sex marriage ceremony. This is a huge win for religious freedom!"
The high court, in a 7-2 decision, decided that the Colorado Civil Rights Commission violated Phillips’ religious rights under the First Amendment by ruling he had violated a Colorado anti-discrimination law.
That law bars businesses from refusing service based on race, sex, marital status or sexual orientation.
Phillips had refused to make a wedding cake for David Mullins and Charlie Craig in 2012.
Graham is currently touring California in a bid to get out the evangelical Christian vote in the June 5 primary election.
