Secretary of State Rex Tillerson admitted in a new interview that he tries to achieve short-term success for President Donald Trump from his office down the street from the White House.

Tillerson sat down with The Wall Street Journal Thursday and spoke about a range of issues, including what he's trying to accomplish as the nation's top diplomat.

Tillerson said he tries to earn "incremental wins" for Trump.

"I see those differences in how we think," Tillerson said. "Most of the things he would do would be done on very short time frames. Everything I spent my life doing was done on 10- to 20-year time frames, so I am quite comfortable thinking in those terms.

"What I have to do is mesh the way I think about it with delivering what he wants on the time frame that he wants it."

Some of the areas where Trump could see some victories are North Korea, ISIS, and NATO, the Journal noted.

Reports in recent weeks and months have suggested that Tillerson's job may be in jeopardy, but he tried to put cold water on that rumor Thursday by saying he would stay in his job "as long as the president thinks I'm useful."
