Every "normal, logical, level-headed individual" in the United States should be armed and ready to defend themselves, outspoken retired U.S. Marine Corps. Gunnery Sgt. R. Lee Ermey, host of the
"GunnyTime" reality show, said Wednesday morning.
"Criminals don't go to the gun shop to buy the guns," Ermey, who became well known after his role as a tough drill instructor in the movie "Full Metal Jacket," told
Fox News' "Fox & Friends" program.
"Let's get this straight right now," the tough-talking retired Marine said. "The criminals buy their guns off the street and they're guns that are not legal. You can't go into a doggone gun store and walk out with an AK-47, you can't do it.
"It's against the law in most states. Look at Arizona. You can own a bazooka if you want to. They have signs in Arizona driving down the road. You see signs saying, do you have your home protection client in place?"
And, he continued, if he's a criminal, he's going to go to a gun-free zone store "before I rob another one that says we don't call 911. You understand that. I mean, people — these thieves and robbers, they go into a place because they want to rob you. They don't go into a place because they want a gun fight."
So that means one thing, Ermey said: "I think everybody should be armed. Every normal, logical, level-headed individual should be armed."
Ermey's television show is heading into its 10th year, and said it will continue on the Outdoor Channel with its focus on weapons.
"We blow stuff up, too, you know?" he told the morning news show. "I mean, we don't just narrow it right down. We fly the airplanes, we shoot the guns, we drive the tanks and if we can't fly it, drive it or shoot it, we blow it up."
Ermey is also a board member of the National Rifle Association and the national spokesperson for
Glock.
