Twitter suspended the social media accounts of Guccifer 2.0 and DCLeaks Saturday following Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s indictment of 12 Russian agents on charges they hacked into Democratic email accounts during the 2016 presidential election, the San Diego-Union reports.

A Twitter spokesman told the Tribune the “account has been suspended for being connected to a network of accounts previously suspended for operating in violation of our rules.”

Mueller said the Twitter accounts were controlled by Russian military officers.

The charges, which came down Friday, were the clearest allegation yet of Russian efforts to meddle in American politics. U.S. intelligence agencies said the hackers’ intents were aimed at helping the presidential campaign of Republican Donald Trump and harming the election bid of his Democratic counterpart Hillary Clinton.

The Twitter handles, which have been dormant for over a year-and-a-half, disseminated emails stolen from Clinton’s camp and the Democratic Party’s organizations. Both accounts claimed to have no association with the Kremlin, but Mueller said that was a ruse.

Former Trump campaign adviser Roger Stone was in contact with Guccifer 2.0 during the presidential campaign, but has said his conversations with the person behind the account were “innocuous.”

The Mueller indictment charges Guccifer sent Stone the following: “Please tell me if i can help u anyhow...it would be a great pleasure for me...What do u think about the info on the turnout model for the democrats entire presidential campaign.”
