Congressional Task Force Chair Warns Americans to Prepare for Terrorism

By    |   Thursday, 12 March 2015 05:28 PM EDT

Americans should prepare to protect their homes, businesses, and families in the event of a terrorist attack or a natural disaster, says Rep. Robert Pittenger.

The North Carolina Republican is chairman of the Congressional Taskforce on Terrorism and Unconventional Warfare, which has prepared a manual to guide people on what to do to prepare for emergencies.

The 24-page booklet, available for download at Pittenger's official congressional website, was started "long before the threat of ISIS became eminent, the concern over thousands of terrorists with Western passports was realized, or the threat of an Ebola outbreak reached American shores," the introduction to the booklet reads.

The booklet lists several types of physical or cyberattacks that could cause the need for several days of emergency supplies, as well as disease outbreaks. It also lists items to be kept in a "ready bag" in case of a need to either hole up in place or flee for several days.

The manual recommends keeping enough supplies for three days — or two weeks in times of heightened alert.

During an appearance Thursday on Fox News Channel's "Your World with Neil Cavuto," Pittenger said the manual isn't intended to alarm people, but give them information to be ready in the event of an unexpected emergency.

"I think it's just the thoughtful, prudent thing to do," Pittenger said.

"We're recommending families have a safe place in their home where they bring water together, they have a NOAA radio, prescriptions they may need, and diapers for babies," he said. "These are things that we can do that frankly saves lives."

Pittenger said his own family has a safe room in their home with food, water, and medical supplies.

"America was secure with oceans on either side," Pittenger said. "And that's a false sense of security today."
