Special Counsel Robert Mueller has been examining conflicting accounts as scrutiny of longtime Trump adviser Roger Stone and WikiLeaks deepens, The Washington post reported Sunday.
Nearly a dozen individuals close to Stone have been brought in for interviews by the special counsel’s investigators. Mueller’s interest lies in whether Stone or his associates communicated with Julian Assange or WikiLeaks about the release of damaging emails hacked from Hillary Clinton’s campaign in 2016.
A Russian intelligence officer known as “Guccifer 2.0” claimed responsibility for hacking the emails, and Stone has admitted to having exchanges with the online persona.
Still, he admits he didn’t do anything wrong and says he didn’t have any knowledge of stolen emails.
"I have always acknowledged playing hardball politics but have also said in my books and in the Netflix documentary that my campaign tactics do not include breaking the law," Stone said in a statement to CNN. "This would not be the first time the special counsel has willfully misled the grand jury."
The Washington Post report says Randy Credico, a former friend of Stone’s, told the grand jury that Stone told him he had a secret backchannel to WikiLeaks during the presidential campaign.
The special counsel has also been investigating Stone’s relationship with author Jerome Corsi. Corsi in early September was subpoenaed to testify before a federal grand jury.
