Gov. DeSantis Wants Fla. to Move on From Common Core

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis is taking steps to leave the Common Core education standards in the rearview mirror in his state.

DeSantis, a former Republican member of the House, announced Thursday he has ordered Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran to put together a new list of education standards for the Sunshine State over the next year.

"We stuck with Common Core then we re-branded it . . . It's all the same. It all needs to be looked at, it all needs to be scrutinized," DeSantis said, the Miami Herald reported.

Florida initially adopted the 2010 Common Core standards, but later implemented in 2014 an altered set of education standards for its public schools to follow. Those standards, however, are based on Common Core.

DeSantis wants to see Common Core disappear from his state completely.

"You would have situations where the parents did not like some of the curriculum, I mean they had trouble even doing basic math to help their kids," DeSantis said. "With Common Core a lot of people just didn't feel like anyone was listening to them, and I think that's a big, big problem."
