If Republicans win back the House this fall, lawmakers can seek a resolution to expunge the impeachment of President Donald Trump, even if it doesn't carry any legal weight, Rep. Chip Roy said Friday.
"I think that what's going to be the real history is the asterisk over the Democratic Party," the Texas Republican told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "Honestly, when we are back in charge, we can have a vote. We can have a resolution that would seek to expunge the impeachment."
And even if the resolution carries no legal weight, "we can send a loud message when we come back in, that this was a political partisan effort."
However, he said Republicans also would be busy the first day in charge "doing the job the American people want us to do, fighting to get healthcare prices down and secure the border."
Even with the animus in the House, Roy said he does think there is an opportunity to achieve some efforts, including revisiting rules on the authorization of the use of military force.
"There are some Democrats who want to work with us," said Roy, adding that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is dragging her fellow party members in the House "into the gutter and sending them down a road the American people don't want to send us dow. We can work together."
Trump also laid out his agenda in his State of the Union address, said Roy.
"He is for American greatness and exceptionalism," said Roy. "Unfortunately, a bunch of Democrats was sitting on their hands when he said America is great."
Trump, he added, is "popular for a reason."
"The American people are seeing that his numbers are going up," said Roy. "They want to get out from under the scourge of high healthcare costs. They want to have jobs. They want to see low unemployment rates. They do believe America is great. The Democrats' model is a failed model. It's a business model of hatred of the president."
