Alabama Chief Justice Roy Moore on Wednesday addressed ethics complaints brought against him, saying his views have been mischaracterized.
"This is not about any wrongdoing I've done. This is not about ethics. This is about marriage, and it's about my legal judgments which I've issued in administrative orders which is in my capacity as chief justice," Moore said at a press conference. "This is about legalism, this is about what the law is."
The Southern Poverty Law Center filed a complaint with the Judicial Inquiry Commission of Alabama after
Moore ordered county probate judges in the state to stop issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
Moore on Wednesday said the complaint is politically motivated and was filed by "atheists, homosexuals and transgender individuals," AL.com reported.
Moore's lawyer, Mat Staver of Liberty Counsel, said he was not anticipating a ruling soon from the JIC, but wanted to have a chance to clear up what he said were mischaracterizations of Moore, who said he never told probate judges to defy a federal order.
