Roy Moore cannot win if he runs again for the Senate seat in Alabama next year, and his losing would harm the Republican cause, President Donald Trump wrote on Twitter Wednesday.
"Republicans cannot allow themselves to again lose the Senate seat in the Great State of Alabama," Trump wrote. "This time it will be for Six Years, not just Two. I have NOTHING against Roy Moore, and unlike many other Republican leaders, wanted him to win. But he didn't, and probably won't."
The president stressed in a continuation of the tweet that "If Alabama does not elect a Republican to the Senate in 2020, many of the incredible gains that we have made during my Presidency may be lost, including our Pro-Life victories. Roy Moore cannot win, and the consequences will be devastating…. Judges and Supreme Court Justices!"
Although Trump supported him throughout his campaign two years ago, Moore lost an Alabama Senate seat to Democrat Doug Jones in a 2017 special election after he was accused of sexually abusing a 14-year-old girl and other young women in the 1980s, according to Mediaite.
The Hill reported last month senior Republican officials in the Senate say it would be a disaster if Moore, who has been leading in polls among potential GOP candidates for the Senate seat, were to become the party's nominee.
Just Tuesday, Donald Trump Jr. criticized Moore amid reports he is considering running for the Senate seat, writing on Twitter that "You're literally the only candidate who could lose a GOP seat in pro-Trump, pro-USA ALABAMA. Running for office should never become a business model."
