Alabama Republican candidate for the Senate Roy Moore leads his Democratic challenger Doug Jones 49 percent to 43 percent among likely voters who say they expect to vote in the Dec. 12 special election, according to a CBS News poll, CBS News reported Sunday.
Moore and Jones are evenly split among all registered voters, and nearly 25 percent of voters describe themselves as "maybe" or "probably" going to vote.
Moore had held a consistent lead in the race to fill the seat left empty when former Alabama GOP Sen. Jeff Sessions left office to become Attorney General earlier this year.
The CBS poll also found that 71 percent of Alabama Republicans said the allegations of sexual misconduct recently charged against Moore which reportedly took place four decades ago were false. Those same respondents also overwhelmingly thought Democrats and the media were to blame for the allegations.
Among Republicans who don't believe the allegations, 92 percent said they thought Democrats were behind the charges, while 88 percent blamed the media for them.
