A bankruptcy court filing Monday shows former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani owes more than $1 million in unpaid taxes.
Giuliani sought bankruptcy protection from creditors in December after a Georgia court ordered him to pay $148 million to two election workers after finding he defamed them by falsely accusing them of election fraud in 2020.
Last month, the bankruptcy court gave Giuliani, a former attorney for former President Donald Trump, permission to challenge the defamation verdict, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday. In court filings last month, he listed more than $10.6 million in assets.
The filing Monday with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of New York showed Giuliani owed $724,232 to the IRS Centralized Insolvency Operation, which helps manage bankruptcy proceedings for the IRS. He also owes more than $281,000 in New York City and state taxes.
The filing also showed he owed $647.46 in membership dues to Trump International Golf Club and $38,520 in membership dues to Emerald Dunes Golf Club; both clubs are in in West Palm Beach, Florida. Other debts included $9,530 owed for an overdraft on a Citigold checking account.
"The only reason we're here today is because Mayor Rudy Giuliani has the courage to speak up and take on the permanent Washington political class, and he refuses to be unfairly censored or bullied into silence," Ted Goodman, a political adviser to Giuliani, said in a statement to Newsmax.
"Mayor Rudy Giuliani earned everything he has in life through honest hard work, unlike so many corrupt politicians who pursue office for the wrong reasons. Mayor Giuliani took down the Mafia, cleaned up New York, and restored the Big Apple as the greatest city in the world. He was highly sought after following his career in public service because of his track record of success and helping people.
"The American people are waking up to the abhorrent weaponization of our justice system for partisan political gain, and the fact that we are here today is just another example of this great injustice."
