Rupert Murdoch is urging former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to throw his hat in the ring and run for president.

"This is Bloomberg's last chance," the billionaire media mogul tweeted Wednesday morning. "You never know until your hat is in the ring!"

Murdoch added, in what may be a veiled reference to Donald Trump's planned boycott of Thursday's GOP presidential debate on his Fox News Channel: "Events change everything, especially during elections."

It's Murdoch's second tweet in the past five days about Bloomberg, who is worth $49 billion, and is said to be mulling an independent run.

Last Saturday, Murdoch said:

Trump pulled out of the debate on Tuesday after Fox News made fun of his decision not to participate after the network's refusal to replace Megyn Kelly as moderator.

The real-estate mogul has been on the warpath over Kelly, one of Fox's top news stars, since the first GOP debate when she hit him with questions about his alleged sexist comments about women.

Murdoch has not addressed the controversy as yet.

According to New York Magazine media reporter Gabriel Sherman, Trump is not taking calls from Fox News chief Roger Ailes about his boycott and will only speak with Murdoch himself.

"Even if Trump's boycott backfires, he's already achieved a historic victory: exploding the myth that a Republican candidate can't openly challenge Fox," Sherman writes.
