Conservative talk radio host
Rush Limbaugh on Tuesday said GOP House Speaker John Boehner is upset at him for not being able to play golf and otherwise pal around with President Barack Obama and other liberals.
Boehner appeared Monday night on The Golf Channel, where he told host
David Feherty that things used to be different.
"Twenty years ago, when we won the first Republican majority in 40 years, there was one radio talk show host nobody had ever heard of," Boehner said. "There was one cable news channel that just did news. And you look at today, you’ve got hundreds of radio talk show hosts all trying to outdo themselves by going further right and further right."
Limbaugh, noting that Boehner could have been speaking about no other talk radio host than himself, told his audience, "We have just learned that I, your host, am the reason the Republican House feels trapped and unable to do what they would really like to do."
"If I go down to see President Obama, the right begins to wonder what I'm up to; the left begins to wonder what the president's up to," Boehner told Feherty. "The president's suggested, 'Hey, you think it's too much trouble if we play golf again?' And I have to look at him and say, 'Yes!'"
Limbaugh countered that he was, in fact, a known name in the early '90s, pointing out that the freshman Republican class actually declared him an honorary member.
Members of the party establishment likely were less aware of him, though, because "I had not spent a lot of time getting to know politicians in Washington."
But Limbaugh's harshest words came in response to Boehner saying that he long ago decided against running for Senate, instead staying in the House with the goal of eventually becoming speaker.
Limbaugh said Boehner had been given a "hanging curveball" when asked what he wanted to do in Congress. Most people would have answered, "Yeah, we wanted to go in there and reduce the size of government. We wanted to get rid of burdensome regulations," Limbaugh said.
But Boehner instead answered with his personal goal to attain leadership.
"He wanted to become speaker, and he's reached the goal," Limbaugh said.
