Russia's ongoing campaign to rattle the U.S. presidential election will likely continue after the results are in, federal intelligence officials tell The Washington Post.

The Post reports that intelligence agencies don't believe Russia's tampering with the election with cyberespionage to alter the outcome.

However, "they have warned that Moscow may continue meddling after the voting has ended to sow doubts about the legitimacy of the result," The Post's Greg Miller and Adam Entous write.

They say Department of Homeland Security officials have found evidence that Russia is "scanning" state-run databases and computer voting systems.

"I think it's correct to say the Russians don't think they can dictate the outcome," Rep. Adam Schiff of California, who sits on the House Intelligence Committee, told The Post.

But, he added, Russian intelligence officials are likely to be "looking through their troves of hacked documents and seeing what they can release."

Last month, former CIA and NSA director Michael Hayden told Newsmax TV that while it is highly likely the Russian government was behind the hacking of Democrats' emails recently released by WikiLeaks, they are not trying to influence election outcomes as much as they want to rattle us.

"I don't think the Russians are trying to pick a winner here," Hayden told "Newsmax Prime" host J.D. Hayworth. "I think even they recognize what they're doing creates unpredictable results. I think they're just trying to mess with our heads."
