London Mayor Sadiq Khan mocked President Donald Trump for going to his private golf course while preparing to deal with the impact of Hurricane Dorian heading toward the United States, Politico reported on Monday.
Khan made the comments after he traveled to Poland on Sunday to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II, a trip Trump canceled because he said he wanted to concentrate on preparations for the hurricane. Vice President Mike Pence went instead.
After reports emerged that Trump went to visit his private golf resort in Virginia, Khan said, "He's clearly busy dealing with a hurricane out on the golf course."
The mayor also slammed Trump by saying he has emboldened racists to speak out.
"These people have been inspired by mainstream politicians who subscribe to their point of view," Khan said. Trump "is a guy who amplifies racist tweets; amplifies the tweets of fascists; says things that are deeply objectionable. If I don't stand up and call that out, I think I'm doing a disservice to Londoners who chose me as their mayor."
Khan and the president have been trading insults for several years, dating back to the presidential campaign trail when Trump talked about banning Muslims from traveling to the U.S.
Khan, London's first Muslim mayor, called his views ignorant.
Trump recently called Khan a "stone cold loser," to which the mayor responded by saying Trump's comments were worthy of "an 11-year-old."
