Sarah Sanders: Merit-Based Immigration Plan Likely Rolled Out Soon

By    |   Monday, 29 April 2019 10:42 AM EDT

Plans for a merit-based immigration system will likely be rolled out over the next couple of weeks, but the White House is still calling on Congress to help fix some more immediate issues, Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said Monday.

"The border is completely broken," Sanders told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "We're seeing that more and more every single day. There is a true humanitarian crisis at the border that has to be addressed. We have children coming in record numbers, unaccompanied minors. It is just skyrocketing. It is inhumane what is taking place."

Democrats though, are not willing to work with President Donald Trump, Sanders said, even though House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer plan to meet with him on Tuesday.

"The primary purpose of that meeting is to discuss infrastructure," she said. "I certainly wouldn't be surprised if immigration comes up. It is a major problem in this country. So far Democrats have refused to acknowledge it and address it...democrats are solely focused on attacking this president and ignoring all the big issues in the country. We hope Tuesday we'll see a change of heart from both Speaker Pelosi and Chuck Schumer."

Sanders traveled to Green Bay, Wis., with Trump for a rally rather than attend the White House Correspondents' Dinner over the weekend, and said that supporters are happy because "the country is booming like it hasn't in decades."
