White House press secretary Sarah Sanders Wednesday accused Democrats of wanting to "live in denial" over the dangers posed at the nation's southern border, while adding that it is "certainly still an option" that President Donald Trump will declare a national emergency in order to get a wall built.
"He's fighting for the protection and safety of every American citizen," Sanders told Fox News' "Fox and Friends."
"The fact that the Democrats want to continue to live in denial and pretend that things that are coming across the border that bring harm to people in this country aren't happening, it's frankly sad, it's ridiculous. You saw that on full display last night in their response to the president."
Sanders also said that it is "certainly still an option" for the president to declare a national emergency at the nation's border, but still, the "best solution" would be for Congress to cooperate.
"This problem is is not just a budgetary issue," she said. "We have legislative fixes that need to take place, and we need Congress to help us do that."
She added that she can't find a reason, other than "playing politics" that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and other Democrats want to fight Trump's border wall plans.
"They care more about playing politics than they do about protecting Americans," Sanders said.
She also slammed Pelosi and Schumer for their rebuttal after the president's Oval Office address Tuesday, calling it "pathetic."
"If this is the face and the future of the Democrat Party, then I think things are looking really good for Republicans," said Sanders.
She added the Trump administration has shown its willingness to work with Democrats, including putting language in its border proposal that includes erecting a steel barrier rather than a concrete wall and including technology Democrats wanted at the nation's ports of entry.
