Sen. Sasse: Trump's War With Media 'Trying to Weaponize Distrust'

Sen. Ben Sasse criticized President Donald Trump's Twitter war with the press, saying he's trying to "weaponize distrust."

In an interview on CNN's "State of the Union," the Nebraska Republican said the First Amendment unites Americans.

"We differ about really big and important things in this country and then we come together around the First Amendment," he said, adding:

"There is an important distinction to draw between bad stories or crappy coverage and the right that citizens have to argue about that and complain — and trying to weaponize distrust."

Sasse also said he believes Congress shouldn't "walk away" from a repeal of Obamacare, and stay in Washington until it's done.

"It needs to be a good replace," he said. "If we can’t though, then there’s no reason to walk away. We should do repeal, with a delay… I’d like to say let’s do the repeal and then let’s try to get 60 out of 100 senators."

He added that lawmakers should stay in Washington, D.C. in August to work on repeal plans in "full public view."
