The desire for Democrats to start numerous investigations into President Donald Trump now that the party has gained control of the House will backfire on liberals and help the president win reelection in 2020, House GOP whip Steve Scalise said, the Washington Examiner reported.

“If they move so far to the left that they only want to harass the president and ultimately impeach the president, that is going to backfire on them, the Louisiana representative said. “We saw this with the [Brett] Kavanaugh hearings.”

Scalise warned that “The danger they’re going to have is that the far left wants them to move toward resistance and ultimately impeachment of the president regardless of the facts, and that’s not where the country is.”

The congressman is beginning a media tour to promote his new book “Back in the Game” about the June 2017 shooting attack on him and other members of the House Republican baseball team, as well as his long recovery from his injuries.

Following the midterms, Scalise officially announced his bid for the House minority whip, after he had considered before the elections to challenge House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy for minority leader if Republicans lost the House, according to The Hill.

Scalise said the Democrats and Republicans could work together on several important issues, but said that “I’m not sure the far left is going to allow the House to work with the president to get things done,” according to the Examiner.
