House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi will be the Democrats' leading candidate for House Speaker, Majority Whip Steve Scalise agreed Tuesday, but he said he doesn't agree with her argument that she should get the nod because so many women are coming to Congress after the first of the year.
"If you look she was their main fundraiser, the one out front the whole way through in this election cycle on the Democrat side," the Louisiana Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom."
"I think she ll be the leading candidate on the Democrat side to be speaker, so they've got an internal fight."
Many candidates said during the election that they would not vote for Pelosi as speaker if they were elected, so Scalise said it will be interesting to see if their first vote will be to break the word they made to their new constituents.
However, Democrats have been "clamoring for years" that they want new leadership, but nobody has emerged to topple the old party heads, said Scalise, and he thinks in the end, Pelosi will be the one to be picked.
Further, he said he thinks it's ironic that Pelosi and others are pushing the "pink wave" notion when millions of dollars were also spent to defeat Republican women.
"Nancy Pelosi spent over $10 million per race to defeat Republican women," said Scalise. "She wants to play the gender card here but she will spend tens of millions of dollars to defeat Republican women."
Scalise also commented on another potential Hillary Clinton campaign for the White House, saying to "let her run."
