Scaramucci: Trump Lives in 'Reality Distortion Field' But Tells Truth

(NBC/"Today")

President Donald Trump has a "reality distortion field" around himself, but one can tell when he's being serious and when he is not, former Communications Director Anthony Scaramucci, the author of a new book, "Trump, the Blue-Collar President," said Monday.

"He has a reality distortion field around himself, where he curves facts toward himself," Scaramucci, who served in the White House just 11 days, told NBC "Today" anchor Savannah Guthrie, while denying that he was using "fancy talk" to avoid saying that the president is not truthful.

"He is living in that bubble," Scaramucci said. "That's the truth. That's what he does...my grandfather had a great line, 'why would you let the truth get in the way of a really good story?' The president is like that."

Trump has a "superserious mode," said Scaramucci, during which one can see he's speaking with great clarity, but at other times, he's on "entertainment mode" when trying to rally a crowd or bring in supporters.

"You can see when he's toggled into entertainment mode and he's trying to rally a crowd or bring people towards him, he probably turns on the reality distortion field," said Scaramucci. "If you're making the point that he tells some fibs, I think most people in Washington do. You know when a politician is lying, Savannah...when their mouths are moving."

Scaramucci said he does like Trump, and he called him a "blue-collar president" who meets with the approval of blue-collar people, even though he himself grew up with great wealth.

"When he won the Republican Party nomination, he hijacked the base of the Democratic Party, which is blue collar," said Scaramucci.
