Sean Spicer: Dancing With the Stars Should Be Politics Free

By    |   Thursday, 22 August 2019 09:48 AM EDT

Former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, one of the newest season competitors on ABC's "Dancing With the Stars," said he shares show co-host Tom Bergeron's opinion that the program should be kept free of politics.

"I hope what this show is at the end of the season is an example of people of a bunch of different backgrounds getting together, leaving politics aside and having a good time in a civil and respectful way," Spicer told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "My hope and goal is that at the end of the season, Tom looks back and says you know what? We need more of this, not less of it."

Bergeron tweeted after the announcement about this season's stars that he had earlier told producers he hoped the new season would be a "joyful respite from our exhausting political climate" and urged them to not have any "divisive bookings."

Spicer, the senior spokesman for American First Action PAC, said he is a "horrible dancer" and was first approached when he left the White House but didn't have time for the show until now.

"It's going to be fun," he said. "It's the kind of entertainment that I can actually encourage my kids and family to watch. And it's what we need more of, which is good wholesome entertainment and I get way out of my comfort zone and do something that's totally new to me."

Spicer said he also believes that there are too many conversations that turn to politics, and he thinks that there are times when people just want to sit down and have an "enjoyable politics-free conversation."
