National security adviser Michael Flynn had two conversations with a Russian ambassador ahead of President Donald Trump's inauguration, White House press secretary Sean Spicer told reporters Monday.
Spicer was addressing questions about Flynn's relationship with Russia after a Wall Street Journal report Sunday cited a source saying that he was being investigated by U.S. counterintelligence agencies.
Flynn is the first under Trump's administration whose communications are reported to be investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Central Intelligence Agency, National Security Agency and Treasury Department.
They are collectively trying to determine the nature of Russia's relationship with Trump and his associates and whether those relationships may have violated the law, WSJ reports, and, the extent of Russia's involvement in the presidential election.
When asked about Flynn's phone calls, Spicer initially said there was one conversation he knew of and that the two talked about the crash carrying the Russian military choir, a conference in Syria on ISIS, setting up a future phone call between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, and also exchanged holiday greetings.
Later in the presser, he said there was a second phone call between Flynn and the ambassador that took place three days ago.
"That was to say, once he gets into office, can we set up that call?" he said. "It hasn't, to my knowledge, has not occurred yet."
