President Donald Trump has ordered the firing of the U.S. Secret Service director, CNN reported Monday, one day after the resignation of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, to whom Secret Service reports.
Fox News also reported the removal of Secret Service Director Randolph "Tex" Alles.
Trump instructed his acting chief of staff, Mick Mulvaney, to fire Alles, CNN reported, citing multiple administration officials. One official described the firings as "a near-systematic purge" at the Department of Homeland Security.
The White House confirmed Alles' departure and said Trump has picked career Secret Service official James Murray to lead the agency.
Nielsen, who oversaw Trump's bitterly contested immigration policies during her tumultuous 16-month tenure, resigned Sunday amid a surge in the number of migrants at the border with Mexico.
Trump, seeking re-election in 2020, has taken a hard line toward immigration since becoming president in January 2017, and the issue may be a central theme in next year's election.
