Sen. Mazie Hirono said Tuesday she hopes special counsel Robert Mueller testifies before the Senate, even if it's in a limited fashion, but she's looking to the House to do what's needed to hear his testimony concerning his extensive investigation.
"They've asked for material from (former White House counsel) Don McGahn, who should also testify, the Hawaii Democrat told CNN's "New Day." "This president has managed to take control of basically the entire executive (branch) as well as half of Congress, that would be the Senate. He hasn't quite gotten control of the House, therefore, you see the kinds of investigations that are happening."
Meanwhile, Hirono, who lambasted Attorney General William Barr during his testimony to the Senate Judiciary Committee and demanded his resignation last week, said she is calling on the office of the inspector general to examine Barr's communications with the White House.
Hirono also Tuesday said she's concerned that Trump talked with Russian President Vladimir Putin last week, reportedly without discussing election interference.
"I can only hope that as the months go by, that the American people will wake up to the fact that our democracy is in danger," said Hirono, pointing to Trump's recent conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
"I think there is very little question that Putin will continue to do everything he can to support this president in 2020," said Hirono.
