Schumer Demands Hearings on Trump-Putin Closed Door Meeting

Tuesday, 17 July 2018 01:43 PM EDT

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Tuesday he is concerned about what President Donald Trump told Vladimir Putin in secret during their closed-door meeting in Helsinki and wants members of Trump’s national security team to testify about what they heard.

"Very importantly, probably most importantly, our Republican colleagues need to join us in demanding testimony from the President's national security team that was in Helsinki -- and we need to do that immediately," Schumer, a New York Democrat, said on the Senate floor, CNN reports.

He said those called before the Senate should include Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

"We need hearings as soon as possible to assess what President Trump might have committed to President Putin in secret. President Trump's public statements were alarming enough," Schumer said.

"Does anyone believe he was tougher on Putin in secret? You can't assume anything but that as weak as he was in public before President Putin, he was even worse in private. Why else did he not want anyone in the room?"

"Where are the notes from the meeting? What did the President agree to? Was Secretary Pompeo briefed afterwards on what happened? Were any other members of the President's team? The American people need to know what has happened … It's our security at risk.’’

Trump met for two hours with Putin behind closed doors and later said the Russian president assured him that his country had not meddled in the 2016 election – an assurance he believed over the conclusion of U.S. intelligence that there was interference.
