Belarus-born businessman Sergei Millian, identified as an unwitting source for the controversial Christopher Steele dossier, worked for months to develop a relationship with George Papadopoulos, the onetime aide to Donald Trump, The Washington Post is reporting.
The Post noted the interactions between the two men reveal Millian, was in closer proximity to Trump’s world than previously known.
According to the newspaper, Millian offered to serve as a go-between for the Trump campaign in 2016 and an author from Belarus who was living in the United States.
Author Mikhail Morgulis said he never ended up hearing from anyone connected to the Trump campaign.
Meanwhile, Millian and Papadopoulos dined together around the time of the inauguration at the Russia House, a Washington restaurant frequented by Russian diplomats. And Millian had also offered Papadopoulos a consulting contract for an unidentified Russian, the Post reported. Papadopoulos said he rejected the offer.
The Post noted Millian was identified as one of the unnamed sources in a campaign dossier Steele put together for Democrats about Trump’s connections to Russia. The newspaper said Millian has denied being a source for the dossier.
However, the Post said he has largely disappeared from public view even as congressional investigators have attempted to interview him.
The Hill noted Papadopoulos served 12 days in prison in September after pleading guilty to lying to the FBI about his contacts with Russia-linked individuals.
