More than two dozen people who worked on Bernie Sanders’ 2016 presidential campaign want a meeting with the senator and his top political advisers to “discuss the issue of sexual violence and harassment on the 2016 campaign in order to prevent such instances from happening during the upcoming presidential cycle,” Politico reported on Sunday.
The signees did not describe specific cases that occurred on the 2016 campaign, and several people who signed the letter emphasized it was about a pervasive culture during political campaigns in general.
Those involved in the letter added that they wanted to bring up the issue before Sanders officially launched a 2020 presidential bid so that there would be real action to deal with the matter if the senator begins assembling his team.
The letter also requested that the meeting include top staffers from the 2016 campaign, as well as Sanders himself.
Friends of Bernie Sanders, the senator's main campaign committee, responded to the letter in a statement to Politico, saying, "We always welcome hearing the experiences and views of our former staff. We also value their right to come to us in a private way so their confidences and privacy are respected. And we will honor this principle with respect to this private letter."
The committee also said that new policies were implemented during the senator's 2018 reelection campaign that included mandating training for all staff and volunteers, as well as creating a toll-free hotline run by a third party to report incidents.
