A 9-year-old Colorado boy successfully convinced his town to overturn a ban on snowball fights that had been in place for decades, the Associated Press reports.
Dane Best of Severance, Colorado made his argument at a meeting of the town board Monday night, leading the members to unanimously lift the ban.
"I think it's an outdated law," Best said before the meeting. "I want to be able to throw a snowball without getting in trouble."
Best's mother, Brooke Best, told The Greeley Tribune her son had first learned of the law, which forbids the throwing of stones or missles, in October. He subsequently began organizing a letter-writing campaign among his classmates, and also found several other archaic or unusual ordinances, including one that defines pets as only cats and dogs.
"All of the kids always get blown away that it's illegal to have snowball fights in Severance," assistant to the town manager of Severance Kyle Rietkerk said before the meeting. "So, what ends up happening is [town leaders] always encourage the kids with, 'You have the power you can change the law.' No one has."
When asked during the meeting who he wanted to hit with a snowball, Dane pointed at his 4-year-old brother, Dax.
