Nate Silver, editor of the news site FiveThirtyEight, can't stop criticizing his ex-employer The New York Times, according to Politico.

He recently called the newspaper arrogant and helped spark debate online over the Times' headline about President Donald Trump's response to recent mass shootings.

Silver, who made his name as the newspaper's data guru, also has engaged in a Twitter debate with his successor.

Silver's criticism of the newspaper is less about methodology and more about personal grievances with the paper, some inside the Times newsroom believe.

The newspaper's White House reporter Maggie Haberman once noted his "gratuitous jabs" aimed at the Times.

Her comments came after Silver expressed his "disappointment" with the Times in a December 29, 2017 tweet.

In recent weeks, Silver has been critical of a Times analysis of former special counsel Robert Mueller's testimony. And he was the first to call attention to the Times' headline on Trump's response to the shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.

The headline read: "TRUMP URGES UNITY VS. RACISM." Silver wrote that he was not sure this was how he would have framed the story. The headline was later changed.

"Media criticism is a core part of what I do," Silver said. "I founded FiveThirtyEight 11 years ago because I had a lot of critiques of how the American press covers elections."

A Times spokesperson told Politico: "We don't always agree with Nate but he sometimes offers smart criticism of our work and we value that, it makes us better."
