Vice President Joe Biden called the tea party "crazy" and lacking in judgment as he spoke privately to a group of 100 black ministers in South Carolina on Tuesday,
CNN.com reports.
"This is not your father's Republican Party," Biden said, according to a source that CNN said gave a detailed account of Biden's remarks. "This is a different breed of cat, man. I am not making a moral judgment, but I will tell you that they have no judgment."
CNN reported that Biden's office declined to comment on his reported remarks.
The vice president was in South Carolina to support Democrats in local races.
Biden also told the clergy members that if Republicans take over the Senate in November it will be bad news for Democrats.
"If they win again, we are going to get no consensus on anything for the next two, four, six years," Biden said. "But if we beat some of these folks, it's going to give some spine to the Republicans who know better."
