Democrats currently do not have anyone who can defeat President Donald Trump in 2020, legendary singer and songwriter Bruce Springsteen told The Sunday Times.
“I don’t see anyone out there at the moment… the man who can beat Trump, or the woman who can beat Trump,” said Springsteen, who is a longtime Democrat. “The Democrats don’t have an obvious, effective presidential candidate,” someone “who can speak some of the same language” as Trump.
Springsteen lauded the Democrats for winning the House in the midterm elections, but said he would “like to have seen a much more full-throated [rejection] of the past two years,” stressing that “We’ve come too far and worked too hard. Too many good people paid too high a price to allow this.”
Springsteen has been a frequent critic of the Trump administration, just last week calling the president “deeply damaged at his core” and “dangerous,” according to The Hill.
Springsteen, who is viewed as having many of the same supporters as Trump does, explained to The Sunday Times several reasons people became Trump voters.
In addition to difficult times for working-class people when steel mills closed in the 1970s and 1980s and the explosion of technology that made many feel they were no longer part of the country, Springsteen said, “Add to that, someone comes in and plays on your racial anxieties, and blames an enormous amount of this on the ‘other’ from the southern side of the border, and you're going to have an audience for those views.”
