State Dept. Memo Rebukes Biden for Israel Support

By    |   Monday, 13 November 2023 09:02 AM EST

President Joe Biden has been "spreading misinformation" on the Israel-Hamas war, according to an internal State Department memo.

The memo, reported Monday by Axios and signed by 100 State Department and United States Agency for International Development (USAID) employees, also accuses Israel of committing "war crimes."

The document says Biden is guilty of "spreading misinformation in his Oct. 10 speech" supporting Israel, and said that "we strongly recommend that the [U.S. government] advocate for the release of hostages by both Hamas and [Israel]," Axios reported.

Although the memo opens by citing the "recent atrocities committed by Hamas on October 7th," it mostly focus on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's counterattack in Gaza.

The memo says Israel's actions in Gaza constitute war crimes and/or crimes against humanity under international law."

"Yet we have failed to reassess our posture towards Israel," the memo states, Axios reported. "We doubled down on our unwavering military assistance to the [Israeli government] without clear or actionable redlines."

The memo criticized Biden for "questioning the number of deaths" reported by the Health Ministry in Gaza.

"Members of the White House and [the National Security Council] displayed a clear disregard for the lives of Palestinians, a documented unwillingness to de-escalate, and, even prior to October 7, a reckless lack of strategic foresight," the memo said.

Sylvia Yacoub, a foreign affairs officer in the Bureau of Middle East Affairs for more than two years, organized the five-page memo, which urges U.S. officials to reassess their policy toward Israel and demand a cease-fire in Gaza.

"In light of Hamas's heinous attack on October 7, the ensuing response by the Government of Israel, and the seemingly full endorsement by the U.S. government to the response, we have drafted a dissent cable calling for a significant change in the Administration's short and long-term policy surround the conflict and path towards regional integration and security," Yacoub wrote, Axios reported.

Politico last week reported that State Department staffers "offered a blistering critique" of the Biden administration's handling of the Israel-Hamas war in a dissent memo.

Reuters reported Friday that more than 1,000 USAID officials signed an open letter urging the Biden administration to call for an immediate cease-fire in the Israel-Hamas war.

It was reported last week that the Arab world's anger with the U.S. for its support of Israel in the war against Hamas continues to grow. American diplomats have told Biden administration officials that the U.S. stance "is losing us Arab publics for a generation."
