Rep. Scalise on Fla. Shooting: 'Big Signs Were Missed by the Govt' 

Law enforcement and the FBI failed to act on a number of warning signs in the Parkland, Florida school shooting, Rep. Steve Scalise said Tuesday.

"In cases like this shooting and many others, multiple laws were already broken but worse than that, big signs were missed in many cases by government itself and the fact that government missed so many of the signs and didn't do the things they should've done to protect people is one of the reasons people feel they should have a need to protect themselves and their family," the Louisiana Republican told "CBS This Morning."

Closing loopholes in the background check system is a major part of the discussion, Scalise said, and the House has passed a bill called "Fix NICS," referring to the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, and the Senate was looking at a similar one.

The congressman, who was a shooting victim in June 2017, visited survivors of the school shooting on Monday.

"Obviously they are going through a lot, too, I went through a lot, and I think we can probably share some of that," Scalise said.
