U.S. Border Patrol agents overwhelmingly support a "wall system" along the border with Mexico, according to a new survey from the National Border Patrol Council.
According to the poll, which was shared with The Washington Times, the vast majority of agents support a "wall system in strategic locations."
- 89 percent think a wall system is necessary;
- 7 percent disagree.
- 95 percent blame the government's failure to hold illegal immigrants awaiting deportation for illegal border crossings.
This poll contradicts the results of a report from Democrats on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, which stated that agents would prefer additional personnel and technology instead of additional fencing on the border.
"More often, these Urgent and Compelling capability gaps were associated with technological or personnel needs, such as insufficient manpower, poor training, or inadequate surveillance equipment," read the report.
Brandon Judd, the president of the NBPC, told the Times that "there are many pieces to the border security puzzle and — contrary to the minority staff report — the survey clearly shows frontline Border Patrol Agents identify a wall system in strategic locations as a vital and necessary piece of the border security puzzle."
"What I found was that the minority staff report was nothing more than 'political crap,'" he added in a statement.
"I'm truly disgusted knowing that the taxpayers had to foot the bill for something that amounted to nothing more than a political hit piece against the president of the United States."
Democratic spokesperson Laura Epstein told the Times that "the committee minority staff looked at data provided to the committee by Customs and Border Protection about priorities for strengthening border security," and "as we have been in the past, we're eager to continue to work with [Customs and Border Protection], NBPC and all stakeholders to ensure that the men and women patrolling the border and working every day to keep our country safe get the resources and support they need to be successful."
